Handrails and Balustrading

Industrial and architectural - Maclock® Systems
Throughout the industry, we have developed safety, industrial and architectural systems. Our systems are in use in areas such as the power generation, petro-chemical (Solid forged type), mining and many other industries, including shopping centres, banks, stadiums, private houses and in a multitude of daily uses. Our products are approved to stringent international standards.

Handrailings and Balustrading - Maclock® Introduction

Angus McLeod and Vital Engineering were the first manufactures of ball type handrail stanchions in the country, and our brand name of Maclock" has gained wide acceptance.

Throughout the industry, we have developed safety, industrial and architectural systems. The systems are in use in areas such as power generation, petro-chemical (solid forged type), mining and many other industries, including shopping centres, banks, stadiums, private houses and a multitude of daily uses, both locally and overseas. Pictorial examples of some of the installations are shown. Our products are tested and approved to the stringent international standards.

Types Manufactured

Due to varied requirements, we have selected and defined the numerous loading criteria, and designed our systems to meet these accordingly. These are illustrated below in the Systems Loading Table. The different grades of material in which our systems are manufactured are also shown in the table below. The illustrations for the individual stanchions are displayed as two ball types, however, three and four ball variations are also manufactured at different centres to suit client requirements.

Specifying

The table below has been drawn up for easy use to determine the system required. HS (Handrail System) runs in two directions. The horizontal one is applicable to the loadings, and the vertical is applicable to the types.

Example: the loading designations are L = light duty, M = medium duty, H = heavy duty, EH = extra heavy duty, and CL = crowd loading. The type designations are shown for the various systems. To specify a system, select the loading required from the horizontal row, and then determine the type required in the grades shown on the vertical column, marked HS.

Example specification:
A mild steel galvanised 2 rail system is required to take a 36kg/m load. The specification would read: Maclock HS/1A/L 2 rail galvanised.

Where: Maclock is brand name. HS/1A/L = co-ordinates of system selection to be manufactured and supplied and 2 rail indicates hand and knee rail at the standard centres illustrated. Where 3 rails are required (hand, knee and ankle rail), the specification would read HS/1A/L - 3 rail galvanised. Centres would be as illustrated. For the longer stanchions please prefix the HS with "x" (e.g. HSx)* For four or more rails please contact technical dept. at Vital.

Alternatively, Individual types as shown in the stanchion and bend illustrations may be used for each and every type required, simply by giving the number off, the type reference and corresponding tube sizes needed. Where the longer stanchions are required please prefix the stanchion type with an "x" (e.g. B90x).

System Loading Table

Reading the table: the figures shown highlighted in the yellow, blue and red areas are based on a balanced design of handrail and stanchion achieving the load category individually and as cost effectively as required by the relevant specifications mentioned. The figures not highlighted indicate the hand/knee rail loadability in that category based on stanchion centres shown. The green shaded areas shown in the bottom section of each material table are items manufactured on request only. Note: All diameters have been rounded off. Masses per metre exclude bends, fittings etc.
